Note to Readers and Leaders of Balaam: The Soothsayer
Yes, Balaam’s donkey talked back to him, but there’s so much more to the story!
As you begin this study, you may be asking—
Why would God choose to speak through a donkey, and then through a soothsayer, of all people?
Why did God even respond to a pagan king or reveal to him the coming of the Messiah?
What can we learn from the life of Balaam and apply to our lives today?
Like a puzzle, the complete story of Balaam must be pieced together. Chapters 22 through 24 of Numbers contain the actual happenings, while Numbers 25 reveals the tragic results of Balaam’s visit to Moab. Numbers 31:1–18 provides more information, and then the final bits can be found in Joshua 13:15–23, 2 Peter 2:15–16, Jude 1:11, and Revelation 2:14.
Balaam, The Soothsayer: The Prophet Who Would Not Listen seeks to put all these pieces together into a cohesive story so that the reader can understand all that God had to say to us through the life of Balaam.
This study consists of an Introduction to set the scene followed by 10 lessons, each of which can be used as a daily devotional if desired.
Balaam, The Soothsayer is designed to be a stand-alone study. However, because the happenings in the Balaam story occurred right at the end of the Israelites arduous 40-year journey to the Promised Land, this book can also be studied in conjunction with Moses: Called By God. (Moses with its 43 lessons followed by Balaam with its 10 lessons together make for about a year of daily devotionals.)
